George was the ninth of ten children of John Waymouth and Ann (nee Blackman).   He was born at Sale Street, Auckland, the year after the family arrived in New Zealand and was baptised at St. Matthew's Church, Auckland on 3 Nov 1861.

Like his father, George was an accountant and was employed by the Bank of New Zealand in Balclutha and Invercargill before becoming the BNZ bank manager at Feilding.

In 1888, George married Susan Blanche (Blanche) Sumpter at St. Lukes Church, Oamaru.   They had two daughters and a son born in Oamaru and Balclutha.
