Silas Waymouth (Fleet Paymaster RN) Born at Pembroke, Wales on 11 March 1837 Died at Malta on 14 March 1911
Silas was the tenth of twelve children of John Waymouth
(Timber John) and Eliza (nee Glanville). He joined the
Accounting Branch of the Royal Navy in 1853. He was
promoted to Paymaster in 1866. For ten years he was
secretary to various Commanders in Chief or Officers at the
Cape, Cork or in the Mediterranean. In 1877 Silas was
appointed transport officer at Southampton and retired as Fleet
Paymaster from the Navy in 1885. He became the secretary
of the Orient Company and was in that position during the
Egyptian Campaign (1896-98) and the South African war
(1899-1902) when the vessels were engaged for the transport
of troops. Among his charitable work, Silas was vice
president of the Royal Naval Benevolent Society. |
