 Gravestone at Dewsbury This photo of the gravestone of John and Hannah Preston was taken in 1986. At that time the stone had been moved from the grave site and formed part of a footpath beside the parish church. The inscription is: In Memory of the late John Preston of Batley who died Nov 7th 1846, Aged 52 years Also Hannah, wife of the above who died Sepr 14th 1849 aged 46 years. Also John, Son of the above who died Sepr 10th 1849 aged 12 years. |
 Joseph Preston (1830-1895), fifth child and third son of John and Hannah Preston of Batley. Joseph was the Mayor of Batley in 1881-1882. He married Martha Brooke in 1852 and they had seven children. |
 The Dewsbury Parish Church, previously dedicated to All Hallows. Part of the walls are Anglo-Saxon and there would have been a timber church on the site before a stone structure was built about AD980. |
