Ross was a son of Thomas and Margaret CUMMINS of County Down, Ireland.
Ross CUMMIN married Bethiah THOMPSON on 16 January 1850 at St Pauls Church, Auckland, New Zealand. One witness was Andrew ROONEY (husband of Bethiah's sister, Frances). The other witness was Ann Jane ROONEY, the eldest daughter of Andrew and Frances. Before this marriage, about 1842, while in Ireland, Bethiah had a daughter, Georgina THOMPSON. Georgina married Henry Walter SMITH at Waiuku in 1864 and they had 19 children. Ross and Bethiah CUMMINS had one child, Samuel Thompson CUMMINS, born at Auckland about 1852. Samuel Thompson CUMMINS married twice, firstly to Mary Agnes PEARSON in 1875 and then to Pipiwharauroa o Raumati TIOPIRA in 1886. In May 1862, Ross CUMMINS advertised his farm for sale: "48 acres, Mount Albert, only four miles from Town, and one from Edgecombe's Hotel. A happy mixture of volcanic and clay soil. Perpetual springs of the finest water, all arable. It is the property of Mr Ross Cummin; who resides upon it but intends to leave." The family did not leave immediately because Bethiah's mother, Jane THOMSON, died at the residence of Ross CUMMINS, near the Northern Hotel on Christmas day 1862, aged 94 years.
Ross made a compensation claim in 1865 in connection with the land wars of the time: |
