This name has various spellings in early church records.   Three variations are Lawrie and Lowrie and Lourie.   I have traced the families back to the late 1700s using church records at Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland.   I also have some sasines records.

My great great great grandparents were William Laurie (1779-183?) and Mary, nee Laurie (1799-1876).   I do not know if they were distant cousins.

The parents of William Laurie were Matthew Laurie and Janet Shaw who were married at Paisley Abbey Church in 1776.   Their children were John Laurie, born 7 September 1777 and William Laurie, born 5 December 1779.

The parents of Mary Laurie were John Laurie (1757-1814) and Mary Dunn (1758-1843) who were married at Paisley Abbey Church in 1785.   Their children were:
John Laurie, born 11 August 1786.
Mary Laurie, born 30 September 1788.
Matthew Laurie, born 12 November 1790.
Jean Laurie, born 14 November 1792.
Robert Laurie, born 8 May 1794.
James Laurie, born 12 January 1797.
Mary Laurie, born 16 January 1799.
James Laurie, born 4 July 1801.
William Laurie, born 14 February 1805.

William Laurie (son of Matthew and Janet) married Mary Laurie (daughter of John and Mary) on 24 December 1814 at Paisley Abbey Church.   Their children were born at Paisley:

Matthew Laurie, born 16 July 1816 married Mary Ann Wilson, one son.
Janet Laurie, born 21 July 1818 married James Miller, 8 children.
William Laurie, born 15 November 1820, never married.
John Laurie, born 3 July 1823 and assumed to have died before 1842.
James Laurie, born 20 December 1825, married Jane Cromwell, 4 children.
Robert Laurie, born 17 July 1829, married Elizabeth Allison, 11 children. (see below)

The father, William Laurie, died before the family emigrated to New Zealand in 1842.   On board the ship "Duchess of Argyle" were Mary with her children Matthew, Janet Miller, William, James and Robert.   They lived in Auckland where the sons set up a brickmaking business.

The 11 children of Robert Laurie and Elizabeth (nee Allison) were:
William Allison Laurie, born 4 September 1855 at Newton, drowned 19 December 1858 aged 3 years.
Mary Laurie, born 11 April 1857 at Newton, married Alfred John Litten, 2 sons.
Margaret Laurie, born 7 December 1858 at Newton, married John Turner, 5 children.
William Laurie, born 23 January 1861 at Newton, married Annie Burletson Duncan, 3 children.
James Shaw Laurie, born 11 May 1863 at Waikumete, married Helen McDowell, 2 children.
Elizabeth Laurie, born 29 April 1865 at Newton, never married.
Robert Laurie, born 9 June 1867 at Newton, married Inez Gatley Udy, no children.
Matthew Laurie, born 11 November 1869 at Waikumete, never married.
John Laurie, born 16 March 1872 at Waikumete, married Agnes Ellen Aitken Mason, 2 daughters.
