This name has various spellings in early church records. Three variations are Lawrie and Lowrie and Lourie. I have traced the families back to the late 1700s using church records at Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. I also have some sasines records.
My great great great grandparents were William Laurie (1779-183?) and Mary, nee Laurie (1799-1876). I do not know if they were distant cousins. The parents of William Laurie were Matthew Laurie and Janet Shaw who were married at Paisley Abbey Church in 1776. Their children were John Laurie, born 7 September 1777 and William Laurie, born 5 December 1779.
The parents of Mary Laurie were John Laurie (1757-1814) and Mary Dunn (1758-1843) who were married at Paisley Abbey Church in 1785. Their children were: William Laurie (son of Matthew and Janet) married Mary Laurie (daughter of John and Mary) on 24 December 1814 at Paisley Abbey Church. Their children were born at Paisley:
Matthew Laurie, born 16 July 1816 married Mary Ann Wilson, one son. The father, William Laurie, died before the family emigrated to New Zealand in 1842. On board the ship "Duchess of Argyle" were Mary with her children Matthew, Janet Miller, William, James and Robert. They lived in Auckland where the sons set up a brickmaking business.
