Thomas Blackman was born near Reading, Berkshire, England about 1730. He married firstly Mary Deed. They lived at the old Barley Mow tavern at Knaphill in the parish of Horsell, Surrey. The house still exists (see photo). Thomas and Mary had six children:
Mary Blackman, born 1753, married John Deadman. James (1764-1843) and Ann (1792-1833) Blackman lived at Fowlers Wells in the village of Chobham, Surrey. (See photos) They were farmers. Their five children were:
James Blackman, born 1817, died 1820 aged three years. John Blackman (1819-1893) wrote a book on his life named "The Story of my Life." It was published by Ray Turner in 1984. During his time in England, John published some of his poetry in books "Flowers and Fancies" and "Home Scenes and Heart Memories." In New Zealand he married a widow, Elizabeth Pulman (nee Chadd) in 1875. She continued to operate her late husband's photographic business under the name Pulman Photographers at Shortland Street, Auckland. John and Elizabeth had one child, Percy James Blackman, born 1878. Percy became a theatre manager and radio broadcaster in Dunedin, New Zealand. Ann Blackman (1821-1906) and her husband John Waymouth lived in the East End of London before emigrating. The first son, John Waymouth (1845-1914) was born at his grandparent's home in Chobham. The next seven children where born in London and two died there while young. The family emigrated to New Zealand on the "William Watson" arriving in Auckland in 1859. Two sons were born in Auckland. See the Waymouth family.
