This Thompson family originated near Annan, Dumfrieshire, Scotland. The name was Thomson (without a "p") in early records and in some branches of the family today. In 1690, Samuel Thompson and his wife Helen McFadden and two young sons moved to Killyleagh, County Down Ireland. Their children were:
John Thompson, born 1687, two daughters, Elizabeth and Jane. Samuel Thompson, the son of James, married Jane Chambers in 1798. Samuel was a farmer of Saintfield, County Down. His wife, Jane (nee Chambers), went to New Zealand when widowed. They had eight children:
James Thompson who went to Baltimore, America.
I have traced over 5000 descendants of Samuel and Jane Thompson.
