This Thompson family originated near Annan, Dumfrieshire, Scotland.   The name was Thomson (without a "p") in early records and in some branches of the family today.   In 1690, Samuel Thompson and his wife Helen McFadden and two young sons moved to Killyleagh, County Down Ireland.   Their children were:

John Thompson, born 1687, two daughters, Elizabeth and Jane.
Samuel Thompson, born 1689, married Sarah Lowry and had two sons, Samuel and James.
James Thompson, born in Ireland, married Margaret Glover, two children, Samuel (see below) and Agnes.
Charles Thompson, married Margaret Russell, three children, Alexander, Robert and Charles.
William Thompson, Royal Artillery, Ascot, England.

Samuel Thompson, the son of James, married Jane Chambers in 1798.   Samuel was a farmer of Saintfield, County Down.   His wife, Jane (nee Chambers), went to New Zealand when widowed.   They had eight children:

James Thompson who went to Baltimore, America.
Mary Thompson, married John Moore and went to Pittsburg, America.
Jane Thompson, married Samuel Blakeney and went to England, nine children.
Margaret Thompson, married her second cousin, Captain John Thompson, two daughters,
Anges Thompson, married her second cousin, Alexander Thompson, six children.
Elizabeth Thompson, born 1810, married Francis Hamilton, went to Auckland N.Z., seven children.
Bethiah Thompson, born 1815, went to Auckland N.Z., married Ross Cummins, two children.
Frances Thompson, born 1816, married Andrew Rooney, went to Auckland N.Z., nine children.

I have traced over 5000 descendants of Samuel and Jane Thompson.
