Until recent years we thought that John Allison listed in the next paragrath, was the father of James Allison, born 1810 as his third to last child.   That was wrong and the correct information is given on this page.

John Allison was born at Erskine, Renfrewshire, Scotland about 1767 and died at Paisley, Renfrewshire in April 1841.   He was a weaver and married Janet White at the Low Church, Paisley, on 10th August 1792.   Their children were born at or near to Paisley:

William Allison, born 1793, married with six children.
John Allison, born 1795.
Jean Allison, born 1796, married Duncan Graham and went to America.
John Allison, born 1796, died aged 14 in the 1810 Paisley canal disaster.
Alexander Allison, born 1799, married with four children.
Agnes Allison, born 1801.
James Allison, born 1803, married with five children and died at Paisley on 7 April 1874.
Janet Allison, born 1806, died 1873 in Australia, married five times. (see below)
Matthew Allison, born 1809.
James Allison, born 1810, (this was our incorrect assumption) (see below)
Robert Allison, born 1813, married with three children.
Agnes Allison, born 1816.

We knew that our ancestor, James Allison, was the son of John Allison and Janet White and was married at Paisley.   That fitted with the family above.   We could not find a baptism for James but he said that he was born at Fulton, near Johnstone, which is near Paisley.   At first we thought that James Allison, born to the family in 1803 had died young which would explain why our James, born seven years later, was also named James.   However when a descendant of the James (1803) contacted us, we knew that our assumption was wrong.   This Allison descendant (David Allison) has researched the family and he discovered that our James Allison was the son of John Allison and Janet White but they where not the same John and Janet that we had assumed.  They lived at Fulton, not Paisley.

Our ancestor, James Allison (1810-1878) married Margaret Faulds (1810-1883) at Paisley on 3 June 1831. They had three surviving children before emigrating in 1842.  Four more children were born in New Zealand.
The children were:

Margaret Allison, born in Paisley on 4 March 1832, married Joseph Senior, 11 children.
Janet White Allison, born in Paisley on 10 June 1834, married William Hume, 11 children.
Elizabeth Allison, born in Paisley on 20 July 1836, married Robert Laurie, 11 children.
James Allison, born in Paisley on 6 October 1838. Died before the family left for New Zealand in 1842.
Charles Allison, born in Whangarei on 21 March 1844, married Sarah Alderton, 9 children.
Mary Allison, born in Auckland on 7 June 1845, married John Alfred Chadwick, 5 children.
Agnes Alice Allison, born in Auckland on 30 May 1847, married Frank Dye, 7 children.
Annie Allison, born in Auckland on 14 April 1849, married John Kelly, 11 children.
